Tip #1: Embrace Neutral Colors
Transitional rooms often feature neutral colors—tan, taupe, cream and gray are popular choices. These neutral colors provide a sense of serenity and calmness to a room and allow the furniture to become the focal point. In this photo, notice the patterned curtains and pillows that provide a pop, while not straying beyond the core gray color.
Tip #2: Focus on Quality over Quantity
Less is more in a transitional room. Showcase your best or favorite accessories—there is no room for clutter in the transitional design style. This dining room features a modern chandelier and one large contemporary mirror on the wall that stand out as focal points.
Tip #3: Use Textures to Make a Statement
As transitional design keeps the pop of color to a minimum, textures are used to make a statement. Incorporate elements such as woven fabrics, natural fibers, wood, glass or metal. The metal fireplace, tile surround and metal and glass coffee table in this photo, all add interest to the room.
Tip #4: Combine Traditional and Modern Furnishings
To get the transitional look, combine traditional and modern furnishings and accessories. For example, this bedroom has a traditional side table and dresser, while the sleek, metal bed frame provides a modern feel. The layered curtains also provide a more interesting look, while continuing to use the neutral palette.
Tip #5: Go for Sophistication without Compromising Comfort
While modern spaces may feel cold to some, the transitional style features the sophistication of modern design, without sacrificing comfort. Oversized, comfortable sofas and chairs are often used, with a patterned rug or curtains and minimal accessories.
