D.C. has a reputation for hot summers, but these cool events will keep you sharp as you gear up for fall. Throughout the city, different museums, embassies, and groups host a variety of programs year-round to engage the community and keep life interesting.
The following is a list of a few upcoming events that you won’t want to miss.
Starting this month, Make Some Noise: Students and the Civil Rights Movement is being featured at the Newseum. It’s a great exhibit that history lovers won’t want to miss. Unlike many other museums in the city, the Newseum charges admission——however, it offers many wonderful educational opportunities and exhibits that make it well worth the ticket price. Be sure to check out their events calendar for more details and day-to-day happenings. If you want to make a full day of it, the National Archives are just a few blocks away and represent another must-see for history-loving residents and visitors alike.

The transition from summer to fall is the ideal time for outdoor activities - and D.C. offers fun options for all kinds of adventurers in an urban setting. Here are some choices for organized activities and classes to enjoy as the leaves start to change.
Cruise around D.C on a borrowed city bike. Capital Bikeshare has brought nearly 3,000 bikes and over 300 stations to the D.C. metro area.
You can get 24-hour ($7) or 3-day ($15) memberships at any station, take out a bike, ride to your destination(s), and then park at any nearby Bikeshare station in the City’s extensive system.
Interested in yoga? Each week the Active Life DC website is updated with excellent community classes- and some are even free! Make sure to add the site to your bookmarks, and check it when you’re ready to stretch it out. Or if yoga isn’t your thing, you can stay fit for free with a fun mix of workout classes that are offered each week, including bootcamps, running clubs, pilates, and more. Check out this site regularly to stay up-to-date.
Want even more free fitness? You can also try a variety of work-week classes with TriFit at Farragut. Golden Triangle Business Improvement District is offering three different workout classes, three nights a week from 5:30 to 6:30 PM, with yoga at Farragut Park on Tuesdays, barre at the Plaza at 2100 M Street on Wednesdays, and Pilates at Farragut Park on Thursdays. The classes will run every week through September, so be sure to check them out before the season is over.
For the Musically Minded
Over the summer, the D.C. music scene heats up with shows, festivals, and concerts at a variety of venues across the metro area. Even as the summer winds to a close, there’s still so much to hear. No matter what your taste, there’s something for you and your crew. We’ve got a few different music options that will keep you moving as the weather gets cooler.
The Devil’s Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith is a Mosaic Theater Company musical production that will thrill the blues lover in your family or crew. This show gives viewers a glimpse into the life of the artist, as told by her most beloved hits. Grab tickets to this off-Broadway gem before it leaves the Mosaic on September 24th.

Nearby Festivals
While the District has its own festival circuit, sometimes it’s good to push the boundaries- just across the border, Northern Virginia and Southern Maryland have plenty to offer.
Hyattsville Arts Festival is an annual event at the Arts District Hyattsville that celebrates dozens of local artists in the Washington DC area. More than 100 local artisans, musicians, dancers, and street performers will be sharing their talents at this year’s festival, so be sure to bring friends and family to enjoy a good time. Food and drink will also be available, and tasting passes for guests over the age of 21 will be on sale for $30- passes will allow holders to sample beers from a variety of craft breweries.
Whether you want to beat the heat with an indoor event, or soak up the last rays of summer sun, the DC area offers something for everyone. Be sure to take advantage of these awesome opportunities before summer ends.
