USA Today, ULI and CEOs for Cities Identify $29 Billion in Savings

March 23, 2011 | by EYA Homes

In a recent story about transit-oriented development by USA Today, Urban Land Institute (ULI) and CEOs for Cities note that the majority of miles driven by Americans isn't to and from work. It's to the grocery store, movies and other lifestyle destinations.

When residential developers design neighborhoods that offer life within walking distance, homeowners spend less time in their cars and more time enjoying the neighborhood cafes and shops.

It's one way, CEOs for Cities says, that Americans could trim $29 billion in transportation costs by cutting just one mile a day from the driving in the car.
