3,000+ People Visit Robinson Landing to View Archaeological Finds Blog Feature

On Saturday, Old Town Alexandria residents and visitors were provided a unique opportunity to view recent archaeological finds discovered at Robinson Landing. More than 3,000 people came out to view the historically important discoveries, including portions of three 18th century sailing vessels.

City of Alexandria staff, archaeologists and volunteers were onsite during the event to provide information on the archaeological investigation and the significance of the discoveries.

Archaeologists discovered the remains of three ships in March while clearing the site for construction of Robinson Landing’s underground parking garage. The ship fragments are believed to have been 30 to 50 feet in length and built in the mid 1700’s. Additional finds include industrial building foundations from the 18th and 19th centuries, foreign coins and more. An estimated 100,000 artifacts have been recovered at the site.

Saturday's event provided a unique opportunity for residents and visitors to see the archaeological finds, including ship portions and building foundations, as they were uncovered in their original location and to learn more about Old Town's vibrant history.
