EYA has long been a proponent of life within walking distance, in which homeowners enjoy easy access to transportation, recreation, shopping, and dining. And increasingly, new homeowners are seeking walkable lifestyles even in the suburbs.

A new report by the Urban Land Institute (ULI) states that over the next decade, the majority of households will be drawn to neighborhoods that combine the best of both urban and suburban living. These new “surban” neighborhoods offer urban amenities such as smaller homes with less maintenance and easy access to shopping and dining, as well as sought-after suburban benefits such as parks, trails, and kid-friendly amenities.

Another interesting trend noted in the report is that these surban neighborhoods may replace traditional shopping centers. By combining housing and retail, residents enjoy convenient, car-free shopping that offers more than just consumer goods, but a lifestyle experience.
